What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an alternative system of medicine. Is it all about treating individuals with herbs?

The understanding of Ayurveda is much beyond this. The word ‘Ayurveda’ can be broken down into ‘Ayur’ and ‘Veda’ which translates to ’The Knowledge of Life’ or ‘The Science of Life’. Ayurveda originated in India about 5000 years ago, and till today it remains true to its roots. The mere understanding of Ayurveda does not lie in its roots, culture or popularity. It is ‘Nature’, ‘It is our individuality’ and ‘It is Life’. Do you wonder how your grandmother knew the medicine or remedy to every small health issue? How their health was great? The secret lies in understanding Ayurveda.

But, how does a healthy individual get sick?

Here comes the second principle of Ayurveda ‘Tridoshas’? If there is a balance between Vata, Pitta and Kapha in a person’s body, he is considered to be Healthy. If there is slight disturbance in the equilibrium of the Tridoshas, it leads to discomfort and eventually sickness.

Vata, Pitta and Kapha represents Air, Fire and Water forces in the body respectively

Wonder why a person is talking while other is Taciturn? One is lean while the other is chubby and fat? All Doshas are present in everyone, but one will be dominant. These Doshas form constitution of an individual which will remain a part of him or her till the last breath. Vata, Pitta and Kapha represents Air, Fire and Water forces in the body respectively.
VATA- Controls all functions in the body. It is the balancing element. It is responsible for supervising functions of mind, perception through senses, excretion of waste and controls Pitta and Kapha. It is the King in the body
PITTA- Controls all metabolic activities in the body. Digestion, Absorption and Assimilation is taken care by Pitta.
KAPHA- Nurtures, Nourishes tissues in our body. Responsible for immunity and lubrication. Strengthens joints, protects and sustains our sense organs.

  • Panchakarma, derived from the Sanskrit word meaning “five actions” or “five treatments”, is a cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind, and consciousness based on Ayurvedic principles. It is used to clean the body of toxic materials left by disease, poor nutrition, and environmental toxins.

  • Vamana: Induced vomiting to eliminate excess mucus and toxins, typically used to treat respiratory and digestive tract disorders.
Virechana: Use of Ayurvedic herbs to induce bowel movements, eliminating toxins and promoting overall health and hormonal balance.

Balancing the Body’s Prakriti: Panchakarma helps balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), which are the physiological forces of the body. A well-functioning body is a place where all the three doshas are in balance.
Improving Digestion: Panchakarma addresses digestive imbalances and enhances the digestive fire(agni), promoting efficient digestion and assimilation of nutrients. This can alleviate issues like bloating, indigestion, and constipation.

Prevention and Cure: One key characteristic of Panchakarma is that it can provide both prevention and cure for various health concerns. It’s not just a bio-purifying therapy, its broad therapeutic effects can also deliver visible relief from many diseases2.
